1. You still have ceramic fuses
Rewireable ceramic fuses offer no protection against electric shock. If your board has them, it is due for an upgrade.
2. Only one or two safety switches
Many older homes have a single safety switch covering all the power points and nothing on the lights. Modern practice is individual RCBO protection on every circuit.
3. One fault takes out the whole house
If a faulty toaster kills the lights and the fridge, too many circuits share one safety switch.
4. There is no room for anything new
Planning a pool, sauna, EV charger or solar? If your board has no spare space, you will need an upgrade or a sub-board.
5. Heat, buzzing or burning smells
A warm board, discoloured breakers or a burning smell are warning signs. Turn off the main switch if it is safe to do so and call an electrician.
6. You are renovating anyway
If walls are open and circuits are changing, it is the cheapest time to bring the board up to date.
