Check the obvious first

Look at your switchboard. If the hot water circuit or a safety switch has tripped, that points to an electrical fault. Do not keep resetting it.

Failed element

The most common fault. The element burns out and the water stays cold. Replacing it is a routine repair.

Thermostat faults

A faulty thermostat can leave water lukewarm or scalding. It can be tested and replaced.

Off-peak supply

Many systems run on a controlled off-peak circuit. If the timer or controlled load fails, the heater never switches on.

Repair or replace

If the tank is leaking, it is time to replace the unit. If the tank is sound, an element or thermostat repair usually makes sense.
