Why Does My Safety Switch Keep Tripping?

A safety switch that keeps tripping is warning you about a fault. Here is how to narrow it down safely before you call an electrician.

It is doing its job

A safety switch trips when it detects current leaking to earth. Constant tripping means there is a fault somewhere, not that the switch is broken.

Try the appliance test

Unplug everything on the affected circuits and reset the switch. Plug items back in one at a time. If it trips when a particular appliance goes in, that appliance is likely the problem.

Check outdoor fittings

Rain getting into outdoor lights, power points or garden lighting is a very common cause, especially after storms.

When to stop and call

If it trips with everything unplugged, or you notice burning smells, heat or sparking, stop resetting it. Turn off the main switch if it is safe to do so and call 0404 939 314.

Upgrade can help

On older boards with one safety switch for everything, a single fault takes out the whole house. Individual RCBOs isolate the fault to one circuit.
